Malta Festival Poznan is one of the most significant performing arts events in Central Europe, and the most prominent festival of its kind in Poland. Founded in 1991 and named after Malta Lake on Poznan’s eastern edge — where the main outdoor stage is situated — the festival has grown from a small street theatre event into a nine-day international programme spanning theatre, dance, performance art, circus, and music. Each year it brings companies from across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia to one of Poland’s most historically rich cities.

What to Expect

The festival operates across multiple venues and formats simultaneously. The main outdoor stages at Malta Lake host large-scale productions that are typically free to attend, drawing audiences of several thousand people on peak evenings. Simultaneously, ticketed indoor performances take place at theatres and arts centres across Poznan. Site-specific works appear in unexpected locations — parks, car parks, courtyards, public squares — turning the city itself into a stage.

A significant proportion of Malta Festival programming is deliberately free or low-cost, reflecting the festival’s founding commitment to making contemporary performance accessible to people who would not normally attend a theatre. The free outdoor programme alone runs to dozens of events across the nine days.

Programme and Tickets

The full programme for 2026 will be published on the festival website (malta-festival.pl) in spring 2026. For ticketed indoor performances, prices generally range from 30 to 100 PLN. Some headline productions sell out quickly, particularly work by well-known international companies. We recommend checking the website and booking as soon as the programme is released.

The outdoor programme requires no booking — arrive and find a spot. Evening performances at Malta Lake typically begin between 20:00 and 21:00 and run until late.

Getting to Poznan and Around the Festival

Poznan is well connected by train to Warsaw (around 2.5 hours by Pendolino), Wroclaw (1.5 hours), and Berlin (2.5 hours by IC). Malta Lake is accessible by tram from the city centre (lines 6, 15, and others) — a journey of about 15 minutes. The city centre venues are walkable from most central accommodation.
