Kraków is one of Central Europe’s most popular city-break destinations, which means accommodation options range from world-class boutique hotels to outstanding budget hostels — often within a few streets of each other.

Best Areas to Stay

Old Town (Stare Miasto): Maximum convenience for sightseeing, with Wawel, the Market Square, and the Cloth Hall all walkable. Prices are higher, and noise from the bar district beneath the square carries on summer nights.

Kazimierz: Increasingly the neighbourhood of choice for independent travellers. Excellent restaurant and bar options, slightly lower prices than the Old Town, and a 15–20 minute walk from Wawel. The Jewish heritage sites are on your doorstep.

Podgórze: South of the Vistula, quieter and still developing as a tourist area. Schindler’s Factory is here. Good tram connections to the centre.

Luxury: Hotel Wentzl

Hotel Wentzl occupies a historic townhouse directly on the Main Market Square, making it the most coveted address in Kraków. The rooms facing the square are the ones to book — views across the Cloth Hall to St Mary’s Basilica are exceptional, particularly in the evening. Breakfast is buffet-style and included in most rates. From approximately PLN 600 per night as of 2026.

Mid-Range: Puro Hotel Kraków Stare Miasto

Puro Hotel consistently receives strong reviews from design-conscious travellers. Located in the Old Town, it balances compact but well-designed rooms with a rooftop terrace that has views toward Wawel. The lobby coffee bar opens early and serves proper espresso. From approximately PLN 450 per night as of 2026.

Mid-Range: Hotel Copernicus

Hotel Copernicus on Kanonicza Street — the most beautiful lane in Kraków, leading up to Wawel Hill — occupies a pair of carefully restored medieval townhouses. The rooftop pool overlooking the castle towers is genuinely memorable. From approximately PLN 520 per night as of 2026.

Budget Hotel: Hotel Galaxy

Hotel Galaxy near the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre is a clean, reliable two-star option with good transport connections. No frills but no problems either. From approximately PLN 200 per night as of 2026.

Budget Hostel: Greg & Tom Beer House Hostel

Greg & Tom Beer House Hostel has repeatedly been named one of the best hostels in Europe. It occupies several buildings in the Old Town; dorm beds come with included breakfast and a convivial atmosphere that makes solo travel easy. Dorms from approximately PLN 80 per night; private rooms from approximately PLN 200 as of 2026.

Booking Tips

  • July and August are peak season — book the Old Town properties at least two months ahead.
  • Kazimierz properties are quieter and often 20–30% cheaper than equivalent quality in the Old Town.
  • Kraków’s weekend party tourism (stag groups in particular) can make the Old Town noisy after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. If noise sensitivity matters, ask for a rear-facing room or choose Kazimierz.
  • Parking in the Old Town is heavily restricted; if arriving by car, book accommodation with a parking arrangement included or use the Park & Ride lots on the city’s edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay in the Old Town or Kazimierz in Kraków?
The Old Town puts you steps from Wawel and the Market Square. Kazimierz is quieter, slightly cheaper, has better independent restaurants and bars, and is a 20-minute walk from the Old Town. Both are excellent choices.
Is Kraków Nowa Huta worth staying in?
Only if you specifically want to experience the socialist realist architecture. For most visitors it is a half-day trip from the centre rather than a base.
When should I book hotels in Kraków?
Book at least 8 weeks ahead for July and August, especially if you want the Old Town options. The Christmas market period (late November to early January) also fills quickly. Shoulder months need 2–3 weeks' notice.
