Trekking in Poland

From the dramatic peaks of the Tatras to the wild Bieszczady wilderness — Poland has more hiking terrain than most visitors realise. We cover the key ranges with trail descriptions, seasonal advice, and practical logistics from Zakopane and beyond.

Key Trekking Areas

Tatra Mountains

The highest range in Poland, straddling the Slovak border south of Zakopane. Peaks reach 2,499 m (Rysy). Trails are well-marked but some are demanding — Morskie Oko lake is one of Europe's most-visited alpine destinations. Best trekked June–October; winter requires crampons and experience.

Base: Zakopane · Best season: June–October

Bieszczady Mountains

The remote southeastern corner of Poland — wild, largely unpopulated, and home to bears, wolves, bison, and lynx. The Bieszczady Loop road and Połoniny ridge trail are the main trekking routes. Far fewer crowds than the Tatras. The highest peak is Tarnica at 1,346 m.

Base: Ustrzyki Dolne · Best season: June–September

Pieniny & Gorce

Smaller ranges east of the Tatras with gentler walking — Three Crowns (Trzy Korony) peak in Pieniny overlooks the Dunajec River Gorge. The Gorce range has excellent ridge trails with views across to the Tatras. Suitable for families and less experienced hikers.

Base: Szczawnica or Nowy Targ · Best season: May–October

Sudeten Mountains

The long mountain range along the Czech border in Lower Silesia. The Karkonosze section (Krkonoše on the Czech side) is the most popular — Śnieżka peak at 1,603 m is the highest. Well-connected from Wrocław or Jelenia Góra. Year-round hiking; ski resort in winter.

Base: Szklarska Poręba or Karpacz · Best season: May–October

Świętokrzyskie Mountains

One of Poland's oldest mountain ranges in the geographical centre of the country — low peaks (max 612 m) with ancient forests and the Łysa Góra ridge. The Świętokrzyski National Park protects primeval forest. Well-suited to leisurely walking rather than serious mountaineering.

Base: Kielce · Best season: April–October

Masurian Lakes Cycling & Walking

Not mountains, but one of the best long-distance walking and cycling destinations in Poland. Over 2,000 lakes in the northeast, connected by trails and quiet roads. The Great Masurian Loop cycling route is over 100 km. Best in summer (June–August) when boats are also running.

Base: Mrągowo or Mikołajki · Best season: June–August
