The Battle of Grunwald reenactment is Europe’s largest medieval battle recreation, drawing thousands of costumed participants and tens of thousands of spectators each July to the site near the village of Grunwald in the Warmia-Masuria region of northeastern Poland. The 2027 edition will mark 617 years since the original battle of 15 July 1410, in which a Polish-Lithuanian coalition defeated the Teutonic Knights in one of the largest battles of medieval Europe.

Confirmed dates: The 2027 reenactment takes place on 17–18 July 2027, with the main battle reenactment on Saturday 17 July at 15:00. Confirmed by grunwald1410.pl. The 2026 reenactment took place on 18 July.

The reenactment

Several thousand participants in authentic period armour and costumes take part, representing the various factions of the 1410 battle: the Polish Crown, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Teutonic Order. The main set-piece reenactment lasts around two hours and involves infantry, cavalry, archery, and siege equipment. The scale - thousands of armed and costumed fighters on an open field - is visually unlike any other event in Poland.

Surrounding the main battle are a four-day programme of medieval encampments, arms demonstrations, tournaments, falconry, period crafts, food stalls serving roasted meats and medieval-style bread, and a permanent exhibition on the historical battle and its significance. Entry to the reenactment field is ticketed; encampment and craft areas may be free or separately ticketed - check grunwald1410.pl for current pricing.

Historical significance

The Battle of Grunwald (known in German as the Battle of Tannenberg) effectively ended Teutonic Knight expansion in the Baltic region. Its 500th anniversary in 1910 drew a famous patriotic gathering during the period of Partitions, and the battle has remained a touchstone of Polish national identity ever since. The 1960 film Krzyżacy (Knights of the Teutonic Order), based on Sienkiewicz’s novel, embedded the battle in Polish cultural memory.

Getting there

Grunwald is approximately 30 km south of Olsztyn in Warmia-Masuria. By car from Warsaw, allow around 2.5 hours via the S7 expressway. The nearest large city is Olsztyn, which has train connections from Warsaw (approximately 2.5 hours). From Olsztyn, special shuttle buses run to the reenactment site on event days. Parking on-site is available but fills early on the main reenactment day - arriving by 09:00 is advisable.

For broader exploration of the Warmia-Masuria region around the reenactment, guided tours of Poland that include the Teutonic Knight castles of Malbork and Olsztyn offer excellent historical context for what you will witness at Grunwald.
