Kraków’s Christmas market is consistently ranked among the finest in Central Europe and one of the best reasons to visit Poland in winter. From late November through early January, the Rynek Główny - the vast medieval market square at the heart of the Old Town - fills with wooden stalls, coloured lights, a large Christmas tree, and the smell of mulled wine and grilled oscypek (smoked sheep’s cheese). The Gothic and Renaissance architecture of the surrounding buildings makes the square exceptional after dark.
Note: Exact 2027 dates have not yet been announced. The 2026–27 market ran 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Expect similar timing for 2027 - typically the last Friday of November to Epiphany (6 January). Check the Kraków tourist board (visitkrakow.com) in October 2027 for confirmed dates.
Character and stalls
The market is organised by the city and stallholders must apply each year, which maintains relatively consistent quality. Craft stalls sell wooden decorations, amber jewellery, hand-painted ceramics, wool scarves, and traditional nativity scenes (szopki krakowskie) - the elaborately decorated cribs unique to Kraków, recognised by UNESCO. Food stalls offer grilled kielbasa, żurek (sour rye soup in a bread bowl), pierogi, and obwarzanek (Kraków’s ring-shaped bread snack). Drinks include grzaniec (mulled wine) and krupnik (honey vodka, served warm). Prices are generally reasonable - most food items 8–15 PLN as of 2026.
Programme and carols
The market opens daily from approximately 10:00 to 21:00, with extended hours on weekends. Outdoor carol concerts take place on the square’s small stage most evenings from around 17:00. The Kraków tourist board publishes the programme in November each year.
Getting there and practical tips
The market is in the Old Town, walkable from most central accommodation. Trams and buses stop at Basztowa. Arrive early evening (17:00–18:00) for the best atmosphere - the lights are on, crowds are manageable, and carol performances are typically underway. December temperatures in Kraków range from -3°C to 5°C; waterproof boots and warm layers are essential. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.
Where to stay
Staying in or adjacent to the Old Town puts the market on your doorstep. Hotel Wawel on Poselska Street (five minutes from Rynek Główny) offers well-reviewed warm service from approximately PLN 500 per night in December. Hotel Copernicus on Kanonicza Street occupies a 15th-century Renaissance building with castle views; expect PLN 800–1,200 per night. Mid-range options along Grodzka Street and in Kazimierz are available from PLN 250–350 per night within 10 minutes of the square.
Search hotels near Krakow Old Town - book by October at the latest; December weekends fill well in advance.

Guided Kraków tours combining the Christmas market with Wawel Castle, the Rynek Underground, and Kazimierz run from approximately PLN 100–180 per person for a 3-hour walking tour - particularly useful for first-time visitors.
