Wianki is Kraków’s midsummer festival, held each year around the summer solstice on the banks of the Vistula River. The 2027 edition is expected on 20–21 June (dates to be confirmed by the Kraków Festival Office - kbf.krakow.pl - in spring 2027). The festival takes its name from the traditional practice of floating flower wreaths (wianki) on the river, a folk tradition linked to the feast of St John (23 June) and to pre-Christian midsummer celebrations.

What happens at Wianki

The centrepiece of Wianki is the evening programme on the Błonia meadow and along the Vistula embankment, within view of Wawel Castle. The festival runs across Saturday and Sunday evening and typically draws hundreds of thousands of people over the two days.

The programme has several fixed elements: a flotilla of illuminated wreaths launched onto the Vistula; free outdoor concerts (in recent years spanning folk, rock, electronic, and world music); and a fireworks display over Wawel Hill. The castle’s fortifications and the river provide a setting that few outdoor festivals in Europe can match.

The wreath-floating tradition - originally girls casting garlands downstream to divine their romantic future - has been transformed into a communal spectacle, with large decorated wreaths set afloat from the embankment as crowds watch from both banks.

Music programme

The concert programme changes each year and is announced in spring by the Kraków Festival Office. In previous years the lineup has included Polish pop, folk-rock, jazz, and electronic acts on multiple stages. The main stage faces the river, with Wawel lit in the background - one of the most memorable concert settings in the country.

Entry to the main festival area is free, though access to specific stages or premium areas may require tickets for headline acts. Check kbf.krakow.pl for the 2027 programme once announced.

Getting there

The festival is concentrated along the Vistula embankment between Wawel Hill and the Dębnicki Bridge, and on the Błonia meadow to the west of the Old Town. Both are walkable from the city centre in 10–20 minutes. Trams run along Krakowska and Dietla Streets to within a few minutes’ walk of the embankment. Driving is impractical: the city closes roads around the festival area and parking is very limited.

What to expect practically

June evenings in Kraków are generally warm (17–22°C), but river-level sites can be breezy. Bring a light layer for the late programme. The festival is extremely popular - the Błonia meadow can hold hundreds of thousands of people, and the embankment fills completely by evening. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a good position near the water for the wreath-floating and fireworks.

Food and drink stalls line the embankment and the edges of Błonia. Prices are festival-level but not extreme. Nearby restaurants in Kazimierz are a good option for dinner before the evening programme.

Wianki falls at the start of summer peak season. Accommodation in Kraków should be booked well in advance - see our Kraków city guide for hotel recommendations across different budgets.
