Zakopane has confirmed its ski season will begin on 12 December 2026, with the main Harenda area opening first. Kasprowy Wierch, the highest and most technically demanding part of the resort, is scheduled to follow on 13 January 2027.

The dates give winter travellers a clear planning window. Christmas week and New Year arrivals will find Harenda and the lower slopes operational; those targeting the best conditions on Kasprowy Wierch should plan for mid-January onwards.

What opens on 12 December

Zakopane - Harenda is the most accessible entry point into the resort, with 16 marked pistes served by a total of 20 lifts across the wider area. The lower slopes are suited to beginners and intermediates and carry the bulk of the resort’s snowmaking infrastructure, which helps maintain coverage during leaner periods in early season.

The main Krupowki promenade, ski hire shops, and the town’s hotels and restaurants operate from early December regardless of snow cover, as Zakopane draws visitors for its mountain atmosphere and food culture even before the lifts open.

Kasprowy Wierch from 13 January

Kasprowy Wierch (1,987m) is where experienced skiers head. Accessed by the famous cable car from the valley, it offers longer, steeper runs and more reliable snow into March. The access cable car is a separate purchase from ski lift passes; book cable car slots in advance for January and February, as daily capacity is capped and demand is high.

Peak season runs from Christmas to the end of February. The most reliable snow cover is typically January and February, though conditions vary year to year.

Getting to Zakopane

Direct trains run from Warsaw, Krakow, and Katowice. From Krakow the journey is approximately two hours by bus or train, making Zakopane an easy overnight or two-night extension of a city break. For dedicated ski trips, staying in Zakopane itself puts you within walking distance of the lifts.

Our Zakopane guide covers accommodation options, what to eat, and how to organise the cable car and lift pass combination. For those wanting to add hiking to their trip, the Tatra Mountains trekking guide covers the main winter-accessible trails around Zakopane.

Book accommodation early

Christmas week is the most competitive period for Zakopane accommodation. Properties within 15 minutes’ walk of the Harenda lifts fill quickly; book now if you want centrally located options for the 20-26 December window.
