St. Dominic’s Fair — Jarmark Swietego Dominika — is one of the oldest continuously running trade fairs in Europe. It has taken place in Gdansk since 1260, when the Dominican order received a papal charter to hold a fair around the feast day of St. Dominic (4 August). For most of its history it was a major commercial event drawing merchants from across the Baltic region; today it has evolved into a vast open-air market and street festival that runs for over three weeks every summer and draws around five million visitors over the course of its run.

Note on 2027 dates: The fair traditionally opens on the last Saturday of July and runs for three weeks. Dates of 24 July – 15 August 2027 are estimated based on the established pattern; check the official fair website (jarmarkswdominika.pl) for confirmed 2027 dates when announced, typically in spring.

What the Fair Covers

The fair occupies the historic core of Gdansk: Dluga Street, Dlugi Targ (Long Market), the Green Gate area, and sections of the riverfront. More than 1,000 stalls are set up across this area, selling an enormous range of goods. You will find antiques and vintage items (furniture, ceramics, coins, maps, militaria), amber jewellery, folk crafts, handmade textiles, Polish ceramics, books, prints, and art. A dedicated area of the fair focuses on collectables and antiques, attracting serious buyers alongside casual browsers.

Street food is well represented: kielbasa, pierogi, langos, smoked fish from the Baltic, ice cream, fresh fruit, and a wide variety of grilled and fried snacks. Beer and cold drinks are available throughout. The fair also has an entertainment programme — outdoor concerts, circus performances, historical re-enactments, and children’s activities — running throughout the three weeks.

What to Buy

Gdansk is historically the world’s amber capital, and the fair is one of the best places in Europe to buy Baltic amber. Prices at the fair tend to be lower than in dedicated Old Town jewellery shops, and the variety is enormous — from raw unworked pieces to complex jewellery with silver settings. The antiques section is also strong: if you have an interest in Central European vintage items, maps, or militaria, allocate several hours.

Genuine craft items are marked separately from mass-produced goods at official fair stalls; look for the fair’s quality mark certification where it appears.

Practical Details

Entry to the fair is free throughout. The fair opens daily from approximately 10:00 to 21:00, with some entertainment events running later. The busiest period is the first weekend, when crowds are at their largest; weekday mornings are considerably quieter and better for serious browsing.

Gdansk’s Old Town is compact and walkable. The main fair route along Dluga Street and Dlugi Targ is approximately 500 metres end to end; with the side streets and riverfront extensions, you can easily spend a full day here. See our Gdansk city guide for accommodation options and a broader overview of the city.

A Gdansk Old Town walking tour is excellent context for the fair’s historical setting — the reconstructed merchant houses along Dluga Street and Dlugi Targ were built specifically as the backdrop to this fair, and understanding the architecture adds considerably to the experience.
