Where to Stay in Zamość: Best Hotels Near the Great Market Square

Zamość is one of Poland’s most remarkable and undervisited cities - a Renaissance jewel founded in 1580 by the nobleman Jan Zamoyski, built to a unified Italian Renaissance design, and preserved so completely that it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The centrepiece is the Rynek Wielki (Great Market Square), one of the finest Renaissance market squares in central Europe, surrounded by arcaded townhouses painted in shades of yellow, green, red, and terracotta.

Unlike Poland’s main tourist cities, Zamość receives only a fraction of the visitor numbers of Krakow or Gdansk. The accommodation scene is correspondingly smaller - a handful of hotels and guesthouses concentrated in or near the Old Town - but prices are significantly lower, and staying in Zamość has a genuinely unhurried quality that the major cities can’t match.

Understanding Zamość’s Layout

Zamość’s Renaissance plan was deliberately compact and ordered. The Old Town (Stare Miasto) is an almost perfectly rectangular grid approximately 600 metres by 700 metres, surrounded by well-preserved bastioned city walls. Everything worth seeing is inside or immediately adjacent to these walls.

Rynek Wielki (Great Market Square) - the heart of the city, surrounded by arcaded buildings. The Town Hall with its distinctive curved staircase stands at the centre. The square hosts outdoor seating in summer and is the primary social hub.

Katedra Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego - the Cathedral (Basilica of the Resurrection) on the west side of the Old Town, a striking example of Mannerist architecture.

The Rotunda - a 19th-century circular fortification on the southeast edge of the city walls, used as an execution site during the Nazi occupation. A sobering but historically important site.

The Bastion system - the remarkably intact 16th-century fortifications can be walked around almost completely. A 2 km walk around the perimeter is one of the best ways to understand the city’s original design.

Given the compact size of Zamość, “neighbourhood” is almost too strong a word - the Old Town IS Zamość, for visitor purposes. The main accommodation is:

Just outside the Old Town - a few hotels in modern buildings immediately adjacent to the walls. Slightly cheaper, and still easy walking distance to everything.

New Town (Nowe Miasto) - the residential and commercial city that has grown up around the historical core. Mainly relevant if you need budget options beyond what the Old Town offers, or are looking for specific chain hotels.

Getting to Zamość

From Lublin (most common approach):

• Bus (PKS or private operators): approximately 1.5–2 hours. Runs several times daily from Lublin bus station. Cost approximately 20–35 PLN ($5–9 USD).
• Car via DK17: approximately 1.5 hours in normal traffic. Paid parking near the Old Town.

From Warsaw:

• Bus (PKS, Flixbus, or private coach): approximately 4–5 hours. A full day of travel makes this better suited to a 2-night stay rather than a quick trip.

From Krakow:

First visit: Stay in the Old Town - Pensjonat Renesans or Hotel Renesans if your budget allows. Walk the city walls on arrival to get orientation. Spend the evening on the Rynek Wielki and have dinner at one of the square’s restaurants. Allow at minimum one full day for the key sites.
