The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of Poland’s most-visited attractions and one of the oldest working salt mines in the world, continuously operated since the 13th century. It sits 14km southeast of Krakow and draws around 1.5 million visitors per year. In peak season, tickets for English-language tours sell out quickly. This guide explains how to book, what things cost, and how to get the most out of your visit.
Ticket Types and Prices (2026)
The main visitor route is the Tourist Route (Trasa Turystyczna), an approximately 3.5km circuit through nine underground levels. All Tourist Route visits are guided: you join a group (typically 20-25 people) with a guide assigned at the mine entrance.
Current approximate prices as of 2026:
| Ticket Type | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult (standard) | PLN 109 |
| Student / Senior (with ID) | PLN 89 |
| Child aged 4-16 | PLN 79 |
| Child under 4 | Free |
| Family (2 adults + 2 children) | PLN 369 |
These are the official rates from the mine’s booking system. Third-party platforms such as Tiqets list the same tours at comparable prices, sometimes with a small booking fee.

The Miner’s Route (Trasa Górnicza) is a longer, more demanding option aimed at visitors who want a deeper look at the working parts of the mine. It requires appropriate clothing and physical fitness. Prices and availability are separate from the Tourist Route.
How to Book
Official website (wieliczka-saltmine.pl): The most direct route. Select your date and language, choose a time slot, and pay online. English-language tours run several times daily (roughly every 30-60 minutes depending on season), but specific time slots fill up faster than others. Morning slots (9am-11am) and early afternoon (1pm-2pm) are the most popular.
Tiqets: Lists confirmed Wieliczka tourist route tours with online booking. Useful if you prefer a single platform for multiple Polish attractions.
Guided tours from Krakow: Several operators combine minibus transport from Krakow with a Wieliczka Salt Mine tour. These are convenient if you don’t want to arrange the bus separately. Prices typically range from PLN 100-180 per person including transport and guided entry.

Getting There from Krakow
The mine is 14km from Krakow’s Old Town. Options:
Minibus (most popular): Minibuses to Wieliczka depart from outside Galeria Krakowska (opposite the main train station) roughly every 10-15 minutes. The journey takes 20-30 minutes and costs approximately PLN 4-5 as of 2026. This is the fastest and cheapest independent option.
Bus 304: Departs from Krakow Prokocim; longer journey of around 45-60 minutes but direct to the mine entrance. Cost approximately PLN 5-6.
Taxi or ride-hail: Around PLN 40-60 each way from central Krakow; 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.
Private transfer: Pre-booking a private transfer from Krakow to Wieliczka and back removes the need to navigate the bus. Pre-book a private transfer.
What the Tourist Route Covers
The guided circuit descends to around 135 metres below ground and passes through chambers carved entirely from salt. Key highlights:
- Chapel of St. Kinga: The most famous chamber, an underground chapel with chandeliers, altar, and relief carvings all made from salt rock. Built by miners over several generations.
- Michalowice Chamber: One of the largest chambers, with a depth of 9m and a central lake.
- Crystal Caves: Natural salt crystal formations in a partially reconstructed section.
- Mining History Exhibits: Tools, salt extraction equipment, and models of the mine at various stages of its 800-year operation.
The route involves approximately 800 steps going down (no elevator option for descent) and an elevator for the return to surface. It is not recommended for visitors with serious mobility issues or extreme claustrophobia.
Opening Hours (2026)
The Tourist Route runs year-round. Approximate hours:
- April-October: 7:30am-7:30pm (last entry approximately 5pm)
- November-March: 8am-5pm (last entry approximately 3pm)
Hours vary and the mine is occasionally closed for private events or maintenance. Check wieliczka-saltmine.pl before booking.
Tips for Your Visit
- Bring a light jacket. Underground temperature is a constant 14-16°C year-round, which feels noticeably cool after a warm surface day.
- Wear comfortable shoes with grip. Some sections are uneven or slightly damp underfoot.
- Allow extra time at the surface. The Salt Mine Museum on the surface is included with the Tourist Route ticket and takes an additional 30-45 minutes.
- Photography is allowed on the Tourist Route without flash. Some chambers have restrictions on tripods.
- If English is essential, check your tour language before booking. Tours are conducted in the language of the group. If you book late, you may be assigned to a Polish-language group with an English audio guide as a supplement.
Combining Wieliczka with Other Krakow Day Trips
Wieliczka takes around half a day including travel from Krakow. It pairs well with an afternoon in Krakow’s Old Town or Kazimierz, or as part of a two-day itinerary that includes Auschwitz-Birkenau the following day. See our Krakow day trips guide for options.
