Wieliczka Salt Mine, 14km southeast of Kraków, is Poland’s most-visited UNESCO World Heritage Site. The salt deposit was mined continuously from the 13th century until 2007, and the underground complex — carved rooms, statues, chandeliers, and a full chapel, all made from salt — is unlike anything else in central Europe. For background on the mine’s history and what to expect, see our complete visitor guide to Wieliczka Salt Mine.

This page covers the tour options, named operators, price tiers, and booking advice.

Tour Routes

Tourist Route (Standard)

The Tourist Route is the standard option for all visitors. It covers:

  • Distance: 3.5km of tunnels
  • Depth: Descends to 135 metres below ground
  • Duration: Approximately 2–2.5 hours with a guide
  • Temperature: Constant 14°C — bring a layer
  • Highlights: Chamber of Copernicus, Chapel of St Kinga (a fully carved underground church), Crystal Caves, the Pieskowa Skała Castle chamber, and the underground lake

The tour is guided only — you cannot walk the Tourist Route independently. Groups are typically 30–50 people; guides speak Polish, English, German, and other languages on request.

Ticket price (booked directly at wieliczka.eu): From approximately PLN 89–99 per adult as of 2026 (standard season). Summer peak (July–August) adds a surcharge; online booking is mandatory and saves the queue.

Miners Route

For visitors who want a more physical, behind-the-scenes experience. The Miners Route is guided by mine workers, covers parts of the mine closed to Tourist Route visitors, and involves:

  • Narrow passages requiring crawling
  • Working equipment demonstrations
  • Salt-hammering and carving demonstrations

Ticket price: From approximately PLN 180 per adult as of 2026. Must book well in advance; limited capacity. Minimum age 8; children under 16 must be accompanied.

Not recommended if you are claustrophobic or have mobility limitations.

Pilgrimage Route

A guided route focused on the Chapel of St Kinga and the mine’s Catholic heritage. Shorter than the Tourist Route. Available on certain dates only; check wieliczka.eu for the schedule.

Organised Tours from Kraków: Named Operators

Krakow Tours (via GetYourGuide and directly)

One of the highest-volume operators for day trips from Kraków. Their standard Wieliczka package includes:

  • Pickup from central Kraków hotels (optional) or central meeting point
  • Return minibus or coach transport (30 minutes each way)
  • Tourist Route guided tour with a Wieliczka-licensed guide
  • Free time in the underground restaurant level

Price: From approximately PLN 150–180 per person as of 2026. Available in English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French. Departs daily at approximately 9am and 1pm.

See Kraków (seecrakow.com)

Well-regarded small-group operator. Their Wieliczka half-day tour includes transport and the Tourist Route guide. Group size typically 8–15. Some departures combine Wieliczka with a morning Old Town walking tour.

Price: From approximately PLN 160–200 per person as of 2026, depending on combination.

Cracow Direct (cracowdirect.com)

Flexible departure times, hotel pickup included in all packages. Offer a “Wieliczka + Auschwitz” combo for visitors wanting to cover both UNESCO sites in one day (though this makes for an extremely long and emotionally demanding day — we recommend separate days).

Wieliczka only: From approximately PLN 155–190 per person as of 2026.

Greenline Transfers / Private Tours

Private tours available for couples and small groups. A private guide plus dedicated vehicle costs approximately PLN 500–700 for up to 4 people as of 2026 — worthwhile if you want to control pace and group size.

Booking Tips

Book Tourist Route tickets at wieliczka.eu as early as possible. The mine has strict visitor capacity limits, and the most popular time slots (9am–12pm) sell out weeks ahead in July–August. Booking online also guarantees your time slot; walk-up queues in summer are long and the desired slot is often unavailable.

Arrive early. The underground chambers get crowded as the day progresses. The 8am–9am entry slot is noticeably less congested than afternoon.

Combine with Kraków’s Old Town. Wieliczka is a half-day excursion, which leaves a full afternoon in Kraków. A morning visit with a 10am–11am entry slot returns you to Kraków by 2pm–3pm. Alternatively, combine with a Kraków free walking tour in the morning.

What to wear. The mine is a constant 14°C year-round — bring a jacket or fleece even in summer. Footwear should be flat and gripping; the paths are smooth but uneven in places.

Photography. Permitted throughout including the Chapel of St Kinga. Flash photography has no restriction, but tripods are not allowed.

Accessibility. The Tourist Route involves 800 steps downward and the equivalent ascent (or a lift for part of the return). It is not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs on the main route; a limited accessible route is available by arrangement — contact wieliczka.eu in advance.

Getting There Without an Organised Tour

Bus 304 from Kraków Główny bus station to Wieliczka Kopalnia (the mine stop) runs every 15–30 minutes during the day, journey approximately 25–30 minutes, cost approximately PLN 4 each way as of 2026. The stop is directly at the mine entrance.

Once at the mine, buy Tourist Route tickets at the ticket office on the ground floor. In peak season, buy online before travelling to guarantee a slot.

The return journey by the same bus is straightforward. Wieliczka town has a small market square worth a brief walk before catching the bus back.

What the Experience Involves

Underground chambers: More than 2,000 chambers exist in the mine; the Tourist Route covers 20 of them. The carved statues throughout the route — mythological figures, Polish historical figures, and religious scenes — were made by miners over centuries.

Chapel of St Kinga: The highlight of the Tourist Route. A fully functioning Catholic chapel carved from salt, 54 metres long and 18 metres high. The floor, walls, bas-reliefs, chandeliers (made from salt crystals), and altarpiece are all salt. Mass is held here regularly; it is an active place of worship, not just a museum exhibit.

Underground brine lake: Lake Wessel on the lower levels of the Tourist Route is one of the most atmospheric stops — a still lake in near-darkness, 135 metres underground.

Underground restaurant and salt spa: Below Tourist Route level, there is an underground restaurant and a salt therapy spa. The spa (Sanatorium) requires a separate booking and is primarily a medical treatment facility; visitors can book sessions, which typically cost approximately PLN 200–400 for a multi-hour session as of 2026.
