Poznań Old Market Square with colourful merchant houses and the Renaissance town hall

Poznań is one of Poland’s oldest cities and, outside of trade fair dates, one of its most relaxed and genuinely local places to spend a few days. The Old Market Square is spectacular — the coloured facades of the Renaissance merchant houses and the clock tower of the Town Hall give it a character that rivals anything in Poland. Hotels cluster around the Old Town and near the main station.

Best Areas to Stay

Stare Miasto (Old Town): The Old Market Square and the streets immediately surrounding it are the obvious base. Walking distance to all the main sights, the best restaurants, and the cathedral on Cathedral Island. If you want a guided introduction, walking tours and day trips depart regularly from the Old Market Square.

Śródmieście (City Centre): The district between the Old Town and Poznań Główny station. Broad selection of mid-range and budget hotels, all within easy walking or tram distance of the Old Market.

Jeżyce: A residential district west of the city centre with a well-developed café, bar, and independent restaurant culture. Slightly cheaper than the Old Town, with a local neighbourhood feel that appeals to repeat visitors.

Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski): Poznań’s Cathedral Island — like Wrocław’s — has a distinct medieval atmosphere. Very limited accommodation here, but proximity to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is a draw for some visitors.

Luxury Hotels

IBB Andersia Hotel

Location: Andersia Square | From approximately PLN 500–650 per night as of 2026

IBB Andersia is the most full-service luxury hotel in Poznań. The building on Andersia Square — one of the city’s main modern plazas — houses a spa, indoor pool, multiple restaurants, and a sky bar with views across the city. During trade fair periods this fills quickly and prices increase substantially. The 5-minute walk to the Old Market Square adds to its appeal for sightseers.

Hotel Bosco

Location: Near the Old Town | From approximately PLN 700–1,100 per night as of 2026

A boutique five-star property in a 19th-century building near the Old Town. Only 30 rooms, known for personal service and a genuinely excellent restaurant. One of the best luxury options for visitors who want character over chain reliability.

Sheraton Poznan Hotel

Location: Adjacent to Poznań MTP fair grounds | From approximately PLN 600 per night as of 2026

The Sheraton is the most business-oriented of the city’s upmarket options, positioned immediately alongside the international fair grounds. The hotel has a pool, fitness centre, and multiple dining options. It is a 20-minute walk from the Old Town or a short tram ride — a natural choice when attending major events at the MTP.

Novotel Poznań Centrum

Location: Near the city centre | From approximately PLN 380–500 per night as of 2026

Novotel operates one of the more practical upscale properties in the city, with consistent four-star facilities — spacious rooms, a gym, a reliable breakfast, and good trade fair proximity. Not the most atmospheric choice, but extremely consistent and well-located.

Mid-Range Hotels

Hotel Brovaria

Location: Old Market Square | From approximately PLN 400–520 per night as of 2026

Hotel Brovaria occupies a position directly on the Old Market Square with a microbrewery in the building. The house-brewed beer is a genuine attraction, not a marketing gimmick. The upper-floor rooms with views of the Market Square are worth requesting — some look directly at the Renaissance Town Hall. Restaurant quality is strong, with a menu that leans on Polish classics and local ingredients.

Hotel Mercure Poznań

Location: Near the train station | From approximately PLN 300–420 per night as of 2026

Mercure operates a reliable mid-range property close to Poznań Główny. Practical for trade fair attendance or for early train departures. Rooms are consistently maintained, breakfast is included in most rates, and the tram to the Old Town takes around 10 minutes.

Puro Hotel Poznań

Location: Near Stary Rynek | From approximately PLN 320–440 per night as of 2026

Puro’s Poznań property is one of the newer additions to the city’s mid-range market and follows the chain’s well-tested formula: good design, compact rooms, a functional lobby bar, and proximity to the Old Town sights. One of the better options in the mid-range tier outside of trade fair dates.

Hotel Blow Up Hall 50 50

Location: Stary Browar cultural complex | From approximately PLN 430–550 per night as of 2026

The name derives from the percentage of historical fabric preserved in the renovation of the 19th-century Stary Browar cotton mill complex. The rooms use designer furniture and the hotel has a genuinely arts-focused character — the Stary Browar shopping and cultural centre surrounds it. A memorable choice for travellers who want something other than standard four-star interiors.

Hotel Vivaldi

Location: Old Town fringe | From approximately PLN 300–400 per night as of 2026

Hotel Vivaldi has a pleasant setting in a quieter Old Town street with a garden terrace that operates in summer. Strong reputation for service and a restaurant that draws local diners as well as hotel guests. A good choice for couples or travellers who want a slightly quieter setting than the Market Square properties.

NH Poznań

Location: Near the main station | From approximately PLN 280–450 per night as of 2026

Part of the NH chain, 202 rooms near the main station with reliable business-grade standards, fitness centre, and easy tram access to the Old Town. Popular during MTP trade fair periods — book months ahead if your dates overlap.

Budget Hotels

Hotel Royal Poznań

Location: City centre | From approximately PLN 180–250 per night as of 2026

Hotel Royal is a straightforward, well-priced option near the centre with clean rooms and no unnecessary extras. Good for a short visit focused on seeing the Old Town rather than the hotel. Reliable rather than remarkable.

B&B Hotel Poznań Centrum

Location: Near the station | From approximately PLN 150–220 per night as of 2026

The B&B chain delivers consistent basic-to-mid-range accommodation across Polish cities, and the Poznań property follows the pattern. Simple rooms, low prices, good transport connections. The right choice if the accommodation budget is tight and you plan to spend most time outside the hotel.

Best Hostels

Frolic Goats Hostel

Location: Old Town | Dorms from approximately PLN 60; private rooms from PLN 150 as of 2026

Frolic Goats is Poznań’s most consistently well-reviewed hostel and one of the better ones in Poland. The staff knowledge of local bars and restaurants is an asset for first-time visitors, and the social atmosphere is strong without being a party hostel. Named after the city’s famous mechanical goats, which appear above the Town Hall clock at noon every day.

Pink Panther’s Hostel

Location: Old Town | Dorms from approximately PLN 55; private rooms from PLN 140 as of 2026

Pink Panther’s is a lower-priced alternative in the Old Town with a central position and a relaxed atmosphere. Basic facilities but clean and well-run.

Seasonal Pricing

MTP Trade Fair periods (spring and autumn): The Poznań International Fair hosts dozens of events throughout the year. When a major fair is running — particularly automotive, construction, or food industry exhibitions — hotel prices across the city can triple and availability drops to near zero within days of the event. Check mtp.pl before booking if your dates are flexible.

Summer (June–August): Leisure demand adds to already-busy fair periods. July and August are generally bookable but can be expensive.

Low season (November–March, excluding fair dates): Best opportunity for deals. January and February see rates 30–40% below the annual average. The Christmas fair at the Old Market Square adds some weekend demand in December but does not cause the same disruption as MTP events.

Getting There

Poznań–Ławica Airport (POZ) is 7 km west of the Old Market Square. Bus 159 runs every 20–30 minutes between the airport and the central station (approximately 25 minutes, 4.60 PLN). Taxi to the city centre costs approximately 35–55 PLN; Bolt typically 28–45 PLN. Private airport transfers take around 20 minutes.

Poznań is on the Berlin–Warsaw international rail corridor. Berlin to Poznań takes approximately 3 hours; Warsaw to Poznań approximately 2.5 hours on the EIC express.

Practical Tips

  • Arriving at Poznań–Ławica Airport? Private airport transfers to the city centre take around 20 minutes. Welcome Pickups offers a fixed-price, meet-and-greet service that simplifies a first arrival.
  • Poznań’s trade fair calendar causes dramatic price spikes — sometimes 3× normal rates. Always check mtp.pl for fair dates before booking. This is the single most important piece of advice for anyone booking accommodation in Poznań.
  • The St Martin’s Day period (around 11 November) is popular; advance booking is advisable. It is also the traditional day for the rogal świętomarciński croissant — a good reason to time a visit if you can.
  • The famous mechanical goats (koziołki) emerge from the Town Hall tower at noon every day — a crowd gathers, and it is worth timing your first morning walk accordingly.
  • Cathedral Island is a 15-minute walk from the Old Market and makes a pleasant half-day addition to an Old Town itinerary.
  • Jeżyce is a good evening destination for dinner away from the tourist circuit. The Głogowska Street area has a concentration of well-regarded independent restaurants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Poznań worth staying in overnight or is it a day trip from Warsaw?
Poznań deserves at least one night. The Old Market Square is one of Poland's finest, and the city has a genuine local culture and restaurant scene that rewards a slower pace. It is 2.5–3 hours by express train from Warsaw, making a two-night stay straightforward.
When is the best time to visit Poznań for accommodation value?
Poznań has a large trade fair calendar, and during major fairs the hotel prices across the city spike significantly — sometimes tripling. The Poznań International Fair (MTP) holds events throughout the year. Check mtp.pl to avoid fair periods if budget matters. May, June, and September outside fair dates offer the best balance of weather and price.
Is Poznań affordable compared to Kraków and Warsaw?
Outside of trade fair periods, Poznań is among the more affordable Polish cities for accommodation. Mid-range hotels in good locations run approximately PLN 250–400 per night as of 2026. Luxury options near the Old Market are rarer than in Kraków or Warsaw.
